The God of the Impossible

ENCOURAGE

Affirmation: “I serve the God of the impossible.”

Sometimes in life we are faced with situations that seems to have no promise of victory. In these situations, there seems to be no way through and we’re often unable to see or even comprehend how we’re going to get to the other side. Because of this lack of hope, people begin to lash out, crash out, and accept defeat. But can I remind you today that you are more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ? Can I remind you today of the God you serve who with His words alone, spoke creation into existence?

When the children of Israel were being led out of captivity there came a time where Pharaoh and his choice chariots began to pursue them. When God’s people first went out, they went in boldness (Exodus 14:8), however when they saw the Egyptians drawing closer and closer, they began to panic and lose hope that they would escape and survive the hand of Pharaoh. How could they so quickly go from being courageous to being cowards? How could they so swiftly move from having confidence in the Lord to moments later abandoning all hope? The issue was they were looking around them instead of looking up to where their help comes from. They were looking at this situation, which seemed impossible instead of looking at the God of the impossible. They saw that the Egyptians were behind them and this great sea was before them and they couldn’t see any possible way out. BUT GOD, in all His sovereignty made a way.

In the midst of the people’s panic, Moses, God’s chosen deliverer, told them, “Do not be afraid. Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord… The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace (Exodus 14:14).” At this time, God said to Moses, “Why do you cry out to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward. But lift up your rod, and stretch our your hand over the sea and divide it. And the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea (Exodus 14:15-16). As the story goes, when Moses outstretched his hand over the sea, the Lord caused the sea to split and His people safely crossed to freedom while behind them the Lord drowned all their enemies. Hallelujah!

What can we learn from this scenario?

  1. We must be anchored in God’s word or else we’ll shipwreck in the storms of life. If He promised you that He would get you through, then trust that no matter how impossible it looks to you, He’s made a way.

  2. If you look at your problems rather than the Problem Solver (God), you will have a hard time discovering solutions. When the children of Israel saw the Egyptians, they began to panic and accept defeat. This will not be your story! Instead, look to God and say “Lord, I know you will fight for me!”

  3. You need to act on God’s instructions. Though the battles you face belong to the Lord, you still have a part to play in gaining the victory. If God’s people didn’t move forward and Moses did not stretch out his hand over the sea in faith that God would split it, they would have likely met their demise. You cannot just sit around hoping God will do all the work for you. He wants you to partner your faith with His word by acting on it.

  4. Sometimes what seems like a setback is God’s setup for your good and His glory. If you read in Exodus 13 and the beginning of chapter14, God actually strategically led His people toward the Red Sea and eventually had them turn back and camp near a place called Pi Hahiroth. He did this to persuade Pharaoh that they were stuck with nowhere to go so that he and his army would pursue them and the Lord could destroy them before the children of Israel. To the children of Israel this wreaked danger, but to God it was simply destiny, so that He could show His people His might, power, and faithfulness to them. Through this experience, Israel saw the true wonder working power of God which caused them to reverence God and built their faith in Him and Hi servant Moses (Exodus 14:31). When you are faced with an impossible situation and God brings you through, doesn’t that build your faith and trust in the Lord?

There are so many lessons we could explore from this brief and brilliant story of our spiritual kin, but the greatest thing I want you to know is that there is absolutely NOTHING THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD! There is no trial, no storm, no situation that our God, who is great and mighty in battle, complete in all wisdom, and faithful to every generation that loves Him, cannot solve!

Call to action: Think about an “impossible” situation you or a loved one may be facing. Reflect on what you need in order to believe that God can make a way and already has. Write two to three anchor scriptures you can stand on in faith to see His will come to pass in this situation.
